Constructing the 3D Power Tool Revolution with Hitachi

Hitachi in Orbit

Launching Into a Cosmic Collaboration

When the opportunity arose to collaborate with Mark Watson, the acclaimed Australian commercial photographer, I knew it would be a challenge, which I’m all about. Our mission? To create a compelling 3D image for a project for Hitachi Powertools Australia, showcasing an astronaut diligently working on a space station arm, all while handling a Hitachi Powertool.

Mission Briefing

Mark Watson, known for his work spanning diverse genres and his propensity for assignments in extreme environments, approached me with this challenge. His inspiration came from my previous work, 'Astral Projection' (LINK), and he offered me ample creative freedom to "go ham" on the detailing. This project required a blend of my design and lighting skills to bring the astronaut and the space station to life.

Rust and Stardust

The real test came not only with the design process, but also the incorporation of Substance Painter, a novel software in my arsenal at the time. Its initial complexity, particularly in terms of structuring the model, UVs, and layers, was daunting. However, as I delved into it, its user-friendly nature emerged and a vital, enduring relationship was forged. Prior to this, I had relied on Vray/Corona for procedural grunge/wear effects, using AO maps to blur the edges and diverse noise maps for a rough texture. But Substance Painter presented new opportunities, allowing me to apply a preset and then manually modify the grunge for a more diverse, lifelike finish. The Hitachi Tools project served as my sandbox for these new techniques, and the outcome was truly invigorating.

Your Vision, Our Tools

So, if your project craves a touch of realism, a splash of grunge, or a heavy dose of detail, don't hesitate to get in touch. Let's bring your visions to life, grunged up and polished, with the magic of 3D artistry.

This project for Hitachi Powertools Australia was one of those rare gems that flowed so seamlessly it was almost eerie. The final feedback? "Everyone is so stoked with your image that the plans are to simplify the original layout to enhance your work," an affirmation that left me over the moon.
