Tailoring the Universe of Star Citizen

Cosmic Creations

Ignition Sequence

The universe of gaming is vast and ever-evolving, filled with opportunities to create, inspire, and immerse players in digital realms beyond their wildest dreams. Recently, I had the privilege to embark on an exhilarating journey with Cloud Imperium Games, creators of the highly anticipated multiplayer space trading and combat simulator, "Star Citizen". Handpicked by Chris Roberts, after seeing my work on the Col. Rigel Astronaut, I found myself steering my course towards this challenging new horizon.

The Star Citizen Launch

In 2012, Chris Roberts, acclaimed creator of the Wing Commander series, set his sights on a new frontier - "Star Citizen". Launched on Kickstarter, the project aimed to raise $500,000 but soared past its goal, amassing over $2 million. The fundraising effort continued on the Star Citizen website, and as of 2023, the campaign has amassed a whopping $300 million, making it one of the most successful crowdfunding initiatives in history.

Translating Concepts to Reality

Embracing the weight of such an ambitious project, I was tasked to breathe life into 2D painted concepts and transform them into stunning 3D models. My design journey was supervised by Forest Stephan, with whom I engaged in daily discussions. Using the cutting-edge tools of Marvelous Designer and Zbrush, I started the process of meticulously crafting the garments. The final polishing touches were made in CryEngine, marking the commencement of look development.

Crafting Futuristic Hardsurface Props

One of the most challenging aspects of this project was the creation of hardsurface props such as helmets. I wanted these to feel futuristic and modern, with curved surfaces, accent details, and high-tech attachments. This was particularly challenging due to the precision required for clean SubD modeling. But, by developing a novel modeling technique - using an overall shape as a guide to maintain curved surfaces - I managed to achieve the desired effect.

Supernova Success

I'm proud to say that the models exceeded my expectations, especially considering this was my first foray into CryEngine. Though the team was still developing their procedural material system, the models looked fantastic. I had the opportunity to work on several characters in the trailers, including the dynamic Shu Bin miners.

This journey into the cosmos of Star Citizen was exhilarating, filled with challenges, learnings, and innovation. If you're seeking to turn your complex hardsurface game engine models into reality, look no further. We thrive on challenges and are ready to bring your ideas to life, no matter how vast the universe may be.
