Every project is a stepping stone to excellence, and the creation of a detailed base model for military characters using Marvelous Designer was no exception. This venture, taken on purely out of my passion for digital tailoring and the desire to push the boundaries of realism in cloth simulation, afforded an exciting challenge. The complexity of designing intricate, layered suits, a hallmark of my work, was an opportunity to test my skills and broaden my capabilities.
Scouting Inspiration
Taking cues from an array of existing military rigs, I embarked on this design journey not with the intention to replicate a particular reference, but to infuse each stitch with inspiration drawn from these real-world examples. Organized layering was key during the suit's development in Marvelous Designer, emphasizing the importance of grouping 2D patterns by garment for swift edits and increased responsiveness in various suit areas.
Field Test: Achieving Realistic Garment Interaction
An essential part of this project was ensuring visible interaction between different pieces of clothing. Achieving a convincing portrayal of cloth bunching under the constriction of an overlayed garment is always a challenge due to the likelyhood of simulations to explode amidst many compressed layers. An effective workaround was employing the iron tool to shrink the fabric area undergoing compression, providing stability and achieving a snug fit.
Adding the Human Touch:
Randomization in Repetition Subtle variations in the width of the MOLLE system's straps were introduced to simulate human error during construction, adding a touch of authenticity to the final product. These variations were achieved by manipulating the internal lines stitched to the vest surface.
A Testament to Detail and Realism
I am thrilled with the final product – a testament to meticulous detail and heightened realism. The design has already attracted thousands of views on CGTrader. The next phase involves converting it into a game-ready model for Unreal Engine 5 and creating additional accessories.
